Have you ever started a venture or building a habit and just after a few days/weeks quit pursuing it? Well that is precisely the problem with today’s world. We want things quickly, want to be rich overnight, want to be successful in a day, want to be famous in a week, etc. You get the idea. What we today fail to understand is that true success at anything needs heart, effort and patience and most importantly continuity.
What is continuity then? Well continuity is doing something over and over and over and over and over again until you master it. We must continuously keep learning to keep earning. Continuity is equally important when learning to play a new instrument or learning a new language or any other skill for that matter. Even a habit takes 21 consecutive days of practice to form a new neural path in the brain.
A few examples will help:
Now continuity doesn’t come easily. First whatever task you are taking upon yourself, make sure it interests you, it excites you. If something is boring and you try to do it daily, it will do nothing but break your spirit and make you think that continuity is very hard to achieve.
Another problem is people don’t keep track of their continuity. They will start something and after 3-4 days in most cases and within a couple of days in some they will feel like they need a break. Once they take a break, their mind turns against them. Doing anything new is a tremendous effort for the brain. What you must understand is, if you take a day off, the next day when you are about to go at it again, your brain will tell you that it is okay to take another day, that you have worked very hard, that you deserve it, you have earned it. What actually happens is that the brain doesn’t want to take the efforts needed to learn something new. Just like us, our brain, resists change. If you take a 3 day gap, trust me, getting back becomes very difficult.
Technology can help you a lot in maintaining your continuity and keeping track of it. Install a tracker app on your phone and keep monitoring it every day. If that doesn’t work for you, find someone else who wants to do the same thing regularly and both track each other’s progress. This is why in Gyms, they make pairs and ask them to help each other out. Plus when you have another person doing the same thing, human tendency is to compete. This tendency will then keep you moving to do better than the other person.
If you cannot find someone pursuing the same interest, find a friend who is good at developing habits and cares or find a mentorwho is already doing what you wish to start. There is nothing more fulfilling for successful people than to mentor others to success.
Continuity becomes easy after 21 days as a new neural path is formed in the brain and the resistance from the brain reduces each consecutive day you work at it. The lesser the days off, the faster the learning curve.
Points to take:
If you keep working at anything with desire each and every day, you will master it so soon that you will not believe it. You will master it better than you started off hoping to. Continuity thus is a virtue.
